These beasts are proven big. Wildlife officials have captured and released a 312 kg (687
pounds) black bear. Sportsmen have taken bears weighing up to 304 kg (670 pounds), and
bears over 227 kg (500 pounds) are frequently reported. In Newfoundland there are two
hunting seasons for the black bear, spring and fall, and hunters can use either rifle or
bow.
